Behind the Label: Sunflower Oil

An inside look at sunflower oil and why it’s a part of the premium fat blend used in KABRITA Goat Milk Formula.

What is sunflower oil?

Sunflower oil is pressed from sunflower seeds. Sunflower oil may be used in baby formula as it contains oleic and linoleic fatty acids, important fats for babies.

Why do we add it?

All baby formula must contain fat, an important macronutrient for developing babies. Fat in breast milk delivers approximately 40-50% of total energy and is important for neurological development. Fat also helps to deliver important fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E and K.

In the US, the industry standard is to use a blend of plant-based oils to mimic, as best as possible, the complex fatty acid composition of breast milk. Sunflower oil contains linoleic and oleic acid, both important fatty acids found in breast milk. Sunflower oil contributes to KABRITA Goat Milk Formula’s premium fat blend.

What makes KABRITA Goat Milk Formula’s fat blend special?

KABRITA Goat Milk Formula’s premium OPO fat blend is made up of four non-GMO oils: high-2 palmitic oil, soybean oil, palm kernel oil, and sunflower oil. Together, these oils mimic, as best as possible, the fatty acid composition found in breast milk. Fat blends with high-2 palmitic acid, such as found in KABRITA Goat Milk Formula, have been associated with increased calcium and fat absorption, as well as improved stool consistency.

Behind the label is an ongoing series looking at the ingredients we choose to include in KABRITA products, in order to help parents make nutritional decisions for their family with confidence and joy.
