Tips for Chronic Stuffy Nose in Toddlers

A chronic stuffy or blocked nose that lingers can be frustrating for both kids and parents and often disrupts sleep. Finding the cause of chronic nasal congestion is important and may differ from child to child. For mild cases, try these simple strategies to help give your little one stuffy nose relief.

  1. Use a nasal aspirator

This device helps to remove mucus from the nose in children who have not yet learned to blow their nose and may provide short-term immediate relief.

  2. Place a cool-mist humidifier in their room

Humidity in the air can help to moisten the nasal passage and loosen dry mucus. Ensure your humidifier is cleaned regularly.

  3. Consider cow dairy as a dietary trigger

If you suspect food may be a contributing factor to your child's symptoms, try our free Diet Diary. Or, work with your healthcare provider to remove all cow milk dairy for one week to determine if this may be contributing to your little one's stuffy nose. If cow milk seems to be a trigger, Kabrita Goat Milk Toddler Formula may be a nutritionally suitable alternative.*

  4. Ensure clean carpets and sheets

Environmental allergens, such as dust, may be a trigger for nasal congestion. Ensure carpets are cleaned and vacuumed, and sheets and pillowcases washed with hypoallergenic detergent regularly.

  5. Offer plenty of water

Drinking water helps to thin out mucus, making it easier to expel. Toddlers should drink 1-4 cups of water daily.
