An inside look at our labeling and why we list milk as a potential allergen to ensure consumer safety.
What is it?
The FDA’s Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) requires that a food that contains an ingredient or protein from a “major food allergen ” be declared on the label.
What is a “major food allergen?”
The FALCPA identifies eight foods or food groups as the major food allergens. They are milk, eggs, fish (e.g., bass, flounder, cod), crustacean shellfish (e.g., crab, lobster, shrimp), tree nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, pecans), peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.
Why do we add it?
We add the statement “Allergen information: Milk” on KABRITA goat milk formula and “Contains Milk” on KABRITA Goat Milk Yogurt and Fruit for a few reasons.
First, the lactose in KABRITA Goat Milk Formula comes from cow milk and may contain trace amount of protein. Lactose is a milk sugar and molecularly identical to lactose from any source (cow, goat or human), but there is limited supply of goat milk lactose available, which restricts us from using this as an ingredient in our formula.
Second, we produce our products in a facility that also produces cow milk products. Though the chance that the product may have come in contact with cow milk ingredients anywhere in the manufacturing process is remote, we protect our consumers from a possible allergic reaction by including this statement on our label.
And third, KABRITA products are not appropriate for children with a confirmed cow milk protein allergy (CMPA), as goat milk protein may also provoke an allergic reaction in children with CMPA.
KABRITA products can be a good solution for children with cow milk sensitivity (CMS). You can learn more about the differences between CMS and CMPA here. If you are unsure whether your child’s symptoms stem from sensitivity or allergy, please consult with your healthcare provider.
